Golf Swing Lessons, Tips & Instruction – How To Hit Long Irons (3-5 Irons)

Learn how to hit long irons and also how to increase swing speed. Many amateurs have problems with their long irons (3-5 irons). Most of the golf instruction teaches us to have our hands in front of the club head at impact. Although this is a very good hand position for a professional with 110+ MPH swing speed, for amateurs with slower swing speeds this causes problems. In this video Golf Instructor, Jaacob Bowden will show you different ways you can utilize your 3-5 irons.

    Nice video, quick question have you check out iGolftv yet?? or search for Golf Tips tv

  2. TheGreatToopi Says:

    the easiest way to …
    the easiest way to accomplish this is to play the ball up in your stance – it accomplishes the same thing.

  3. fookfocketyfookfook Says:

    I welded some rebar …
    I welded some rebar onto my pitching wedge and now I have the best 3 iron the world has ever known. I call it the panther 500X.

  4. warwolfii Says:

    I think the most …
    I think the most usable piece of advice here for the weekend golfer is to toss the old long irons in the dumpster and get some hybrids. Why continue to frustrate yourself when something a little better is so readily available. My hybrids have added a nice new dimension to my game.

  5. claytronica23 Says:

    This advice is not …
    This advice is not bad in and of itself, but I don’t think you’ll find many amateurs with their hands in front of the ball – as in nearly zero. Beginners out there – skip this one for now and focus on getting your hands in front of the ball, because if you can’t do that, you won’t ever break 90.

    @cmares58

    He told …
    @cmares58

    He told us 3 things… the first one is avoid holding your angle too late like you were swinging as hard as Tiger Woods; give it a chance to pop the ball little higher. You can do this easily by correctly your swing just a bit and taking off some of your late lag in your wrist.

    The third advice was too a good one: he tells us that our swing may actually not be good enough to hit well with long distance irons… improve your general swing speed and change your iron game.

    Actually …
    @cmares58

    Actually, his advice was a little different if you listened and took time to understand something out of it.

    Hybrids are …
    Hybrids are incredible.. They are bit funny to use at first because you think you need to swing them like a fairway wood but once figure out they are no different from a middle iron they really help.

    I use a 3 and 4 as hybrid but keep 5 iron because I happen to hit my best shots with it :) .

  9. jaacobbowden Says:

    @cmares58 – …
    @cmares58 – Actually, you might be surprised. The inherent design characteristics of many hybrids are to help get the ball up in the air easier…and given the same launch angle and spin rate, a ball taking off with more ball speed will reach a higher peak height and also drop down more vertically to the ground.

  10. cmares58 Says:

    this video is …
    this video is stupid. “im not hitting my 3 iron far what can I do?”… Buy a hybrid, and swing harder… Thanks alot dude

  11. JEEDAB123 Says:

    Dude i know his …
    Dude i know his intentions are good, but its hard enough as it is to have that good impact angle, i’d rather hit short irons with good impact then hit long irons okay with wrong impact

    could you look at my swing video? and give me any advise, please.

  13. jaacobbowden Says:

    There are no swings …
    There are no swings in this particular video because I thought the information provided would be self-explanatory.

    If you’d like to see some swings, the most recent ones I have as of today on the internet are on my personal channel. Search for the video “Jaacob Bowden Golf – Winter Practice in Zurich”. That particular video has several swings from earlier in the week.

    dude…how come you don’t show us? you just kind of talk about it… this is what i hate about these kinds of people…talk talk and talk, but not show… take a swing dude…

  15. jaacobbowden Says:

    What more …
    What more specifically do you mean by legs coming up? One or both coming off the ground? Straightening of the legs?

  16. Crater56 Says:

    hi can someone help …
    hi can someone help me please, i have just recently started to rotate on my backswing so that my back is facing the target. i find my legs coming up instead of just twisting with my body.??????? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

  17. jaacobbowden Says:

    It depends and it’s …
    It depends and it’s difficult to say without seeing you swing, but you may just be dipping down a little bit when you swing. Have a friend watch you or take a face-on video shot of your swing to see if this might be the case.

    We also have a video about hitting fat shots elsewhere on the channel. Take a look at that and see if it helps get you started.

  18. elvisweiner456 Says:

    how come when i it …
    how come when i it with all my irons except the wedge i hit the dirt and not the ball

  19. bdyftns Says:

    I use black …
    I use black electric tape on the bottom of the iron to make sure I’m hitting it on the center. You can get some ‘sticky’ paper that goes on the face of the club so you can see where your ball is striking the club face. Both are very helpful.

  20. stuymandie Says:

    i use a sharpie …
    i use a sharpie marker it leaves a mark on the face time after time

  21. camerontd Says:

    What do you use to …
    What do you use to mark your balls to leave a mark on the club face?

  22. secrettogolf Says:

    Just remember one …
    Just remember one very important thing.You are not simply returning to your address position. You create an angle between the shaft and your hands IN THE BACKSWING,you have created what is popularly known as the, “Flying Wedge.” With a straight left arm and hand,and the shifting of weight to the left side use this wedge to strike the ball with the right hand. It is in the backswing that the angle is created with which to strike the ball,not the set up.Practice w 1/4,1/2 &3/4 swings.

  23. gilder37 Says:

    Hey I have always …
    Hey I have always been taught to have my hands in front of the ball, but what is the straight up and down one? I’ve never heard of that one would you mind explaining that one to me please?

  24. stuymandie Says:

    i like to look at …
    i like to look at the videos for tips but the best thing i have done is just get 100 balls and go to the park or a school feild and just hit ball after ball until you find what works for you i put a mark on all my balls so it leaves a mark on my club face to see exactly where i hit it as with cosistency i now have my legs straight with very little flex and try to mimic iron byron machine so the bottom half of me stays quite stationary and this has stopped me hitting fat

  25. jaacobbowden Says:

    Although I think …
    Although I think that hands forward is more popularly taught, there are instructors that advocate both ways. I don’t think either one of them is “wrong”…success is found within the whole range. Personally, I like my hands slightly forward, but favoring the straight up side. Basically, it mimics the impact position that I want to get to. If you can make good contact either way, then it probably won’t matter too much which one you go with.
